Nintendo confirms Wii Vitality Sensor’s death

20130707-125004.jpg

Oh Wii Vitality Sensor, we hardly knew ye… in that we didn’t know you at all. Nintendo introduced the pulse-sensing Wii peripheral at its E3 2009 stage show, and said we’d hear more in “the future.” That future never came, despite occasional assurances that the device still existed. During a recent Q&A with Nintendo head Satoru Iwata, an analyst brought up the device once more, and Iwata said it encountered too many issues in quality assurance testing to bring to market.

“We have not been able to launch it as a commercial product because we could not get it to work as we expected and it was of narrower application than we had originally thought,” he told investors. According to Iwata’s estimates, approximately 90 out of 100 people were able to use the Vitality Sensor without a hitch, though he (thankfully) requires that it work with “1,000 of 1,000 people.” However, he admitted “but [since we use the living body signal with individual differences] it is a little bit of a stretch to make it applicable to every single person.” He’d still love to make the Vitality Sensor a reality “if technology enhancements” allow, but thus far, testing renders it “insufficient as a commercial product.”

In other Nintendo news, Iwata assured investors that he will continue to monitor employee cafeteria quality-related concerns. Seriously though, that was a question.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days release date announced

20130702-153837.jpg

Last month, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Telltale Games confirmed its plans to release The Walking Dead: 400 Days, a bridging episode between the first and second seasons of its hit episodic adventure game.

Today, the company confirmed that the additional chapter will launch on selected platforms this week, landing first on the North American PlayStation Network on July 2, Steam and the Telltale Games Store on Wednesday July 3, and worldwide on Xbox Live from July 5. European PlayStation owners will be able to download the game from July 10, while the iOS version will launch globally on July 11.

The game takes place over 400 days in the same time period as the first season, but will not focus on Lee or Clementine. Instead, the game will be split into five short stories, each from the perspective of a different, new character in the universe. Players who have an existing save file from the first season will have their decisions carried over, while all choices made in 400 Days will also impact the upcoming second season, which will begin later this year.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days is not included in the original season pass, and will cost around $4.99. The game will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, iOS, and, for the first time, Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld.

Possible Photos of Plastic Rear Shell from Apple’s Lower-Cost iPhone [Updated]

Nowhereelse.fr shares [Google translation] a pair of photos of what may be the rear shell of Apple’s rumored lower-cost plastic iPhone. While the site acknowledges that the part could simply be a Chinese clone of an iPhone 5 rear shell, certain features such as a round rear microphone hole and rounded rear edges are consistent with previous claims for the lower-cost iPhone, including leaked design drawings from a case maker.

Apple has been said to be planning to release the lower-cost iPhone later this year in an array of colors, with one report claiming that Apple would be using essentially the same colors as found in the company’s line of iPhone 4/4S bumpers, although that report indicated that green appeared to have been excluded from the set. This green rear shell is indeed fairly close in color to the green iPhone bumper.

Update 10:03 PM: Nowhereelse.fr has spotted two more photos showing the same part also in yellow and red.

Apple reportedly clinches TSMC chip manufacturing deal

20130629-132541.jpg

Rumors of Apple switching its chip manufacturing from Samsung to TSMC have persisted for a long, long time. However, they may be more substantial this time around: the Wall Street Journal claims that Apple quietly signed a deal with TSMC earlier this month. The agreement reportedly has TSMC taking over some of Apple’s chip production in 2014. Technical setbacks kept the agreement from happening any sooner, according to the sources. Neither company is commenting on the accuracy of the story, although few would doubt Apple’s incentives to reduce its dependency on Samsung-made silicon — it’s not keen on funding a primary competitor.

iOS 7 Beta 3 Reportedly Coming on Monday, July 8

BGR reports that Apple is planning to release the third beta version of iOS 7 to its carrier ios_7_icon-250x249partners on Monday, July 8, with seeding to registered developers expected on the same day.

BGR has been informed by trusted sources that iOS 7 beta 3 is currently scheduled to be made available to carriers for testing on July 8th. These are the same sources who accurately foretold the release timing of Apple’s last iOS 7 beta, and just like iOS 7 beta 2, it is likely that the new software will be released to developers on the same day it reaches carriers.

A July 8 release for the third beta would come two weeks after the release of the second beta, which occurred on Monday of this week. That release came two weeks after Apple rolled out the initial beta version of iOS 7 at its Worldwide Developers Conference.

In iOS 6 beta testing last year, Apple used a similar two-week interval between the first and second releases, but then moved to three-week intervals for the third and fourth beta versions.

If a July 8 release for beta 3 is accurate, Apple may be moving to a more rapid seeding schedule to keep developers updated on the numerous changes included in iOS 7. The upcoming operating system represents the most significant visual change to iOS since its debut in 2007, and Apple is said to still be refining many of the design elements as it

Reeder for iPhone goes free for now, gets Google Reader alternatives soon

20130628-223825.jpg

Silvio Rizzi made the iPad and Mac versions of Reeder free to use in the wake of Google’s plans to shut down Google Reader, but he left the iPhone app at its usual $3 price — and its fate in the air. Existing users can now rest easy, as Rizzi has pledged ongoing support for the smaller screen. The current edition of Reeder for iPhone is now free to use, and an already-submitted 3.2 update will bring support for alternative news services like Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler and Fever. Anyone using the iPad and Mac editions will have to be patient, however. Both apps will eventually get the additional news sources, but Rizzi is taking down the existing releases on July 1st to minimize confusion while he works on updates.
